• The 2020 Geneva Motor Show has been officially cancelled amidst growing concerns over the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Whilst Geneva organisers had previously insisted the Motor Show would go ahead as planned, the Swiss government has since introduced a ban this morning on all public gatherings over 1,000 people until 15th March to help contain the spread of the infection.

    "We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors' top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision," said Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the Foundation Board.

    The show was due to open to the press next week, before its public opening between 5th - 15th March and had over 600,000 visitors attend last year. Dismantling of the event will now have to be organised and it has been confirmed that all those who have purchased tickets for the event will be refunded.     Dozens of new car launches and reveals were planned for the event, including the reveal of the all-electric Fiat 500e, BMW’s electric i4 and IX3 and the new-generation Audi A3. This is first time the Geneva Motor Show has been cancelled since the Second World War.


  • Volkswagen has revealed the New Golf GTI, GTE and GTD this week. All models are equipped with an illuminated radiator grille bar as standard and feature a digital instrument cluster and 10-inch infotainment system. Customers also have the option of adding five ‘strikingly arranged’ X-shaped LEDs to create the fog lights in the bumpers.

    Now in its eight generation, the new GTI uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to generate 245 PS. The four-cylinder engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox, with a new shift-by-wire DSG gearbox also available as an option.

    GTE. Now with identical output to the GTI, the GTE also generates 245 PS using its plug-in hybrid drive and consists of a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery. Compared with its predecessor, the all-electric range has increased significantly to up to 37 miles and can be driven at speeds of up to 80mph in all-electric mode. Volkswagen’s engineers have achieved the increase in range by improving the Golf’s aerodynamics and managing to increase the energy content of the battery by 50% to 13 kWh.

    GTD. The new Golf GTD is a described by VW as a ‘real endurance athlete’ and uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with an output of 200 PS. As per the rest of the turbocharged diesel engines in the new Golf range, the GTD’s drive system is linked to two SCR catalytic converters connected in series. This new twin dosing SCR system with dual AdBlue injection greatly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions compared with its predecessor.

    The New Volkswagen Golf GTI, GTE and GTD will go sale in the Summer.

  • Citroen has unveiled an all-electric two-seater city car, the Citroen Ami, a practical response to short journeys, aiming to provide easier access to city centres and act as an alternative to scooters, bicycles, mopeds, or public transport

    Like the Renault Twizy, the Citroen Ami is classed as a quadricyle and can therefore be driven across Europe without a driving license by those over the age of 16.

    With a range up to 43 miles, the Citroen Ami uses a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, housed flat under the floor and can be recharged via the on-board electric cable located in the passenger-side doorway. Three hours are enough for a full charge from a conventional household socket.

    Prices for the Citroen Ami will start at €6000 (£5054). Two other usage models will also be offered, including a long-term rental option which requires a deposit of €2644 (£2227) and monthly payments of €19.99 (£17). The Ami will also be available via PSA Group’s car-sharing scheme, Free2Move, in which customers can drive the Ami for 26 cents (22p) per minute.

    Launching in Europe this Summer, UK availability is yet to be announced, with Citroen’s marketing chief, Arnaud Belloni, so far confirming "In the UK, it will come later - if it comes. We need to validate the project in France and other countries first."

 

  • Following the DS 7 CROSSBACK and DS 3 CROSSBACK, DS Automobiles has now revealed the third car of its second-generation line-up, the DS 9.

    The DS 9 is an all-new premium large saloon for the global market and shares the same EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform 2) architecture as the DS 7 CROSSBACK, resulting in a longer wheelbase. This extra length results in improved rear passenger space and its design has a sleek silhouette with a fastback-style steeply raked rear window. At a length of 4.93 metres and a width of 1.85 metres, the dimensions of the car are akin with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. Although despite its larger size, the DS 9 is in fact aiming to compete with other compact premium saloons, such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.

    At first, DS 9 will be offered with a new E-TENSE plug-in hybrid powertrain comprising a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and 11.9kWh battery, deploying 225hp and capable of travelling between up to 31 miles.

    The line-up will shortly afterwards be topped by two more E-TENSE power units – the first with 250hp, 2-wheel drive plus increased range capability, and the second – a 360hp with an intelligent 4-wheel drive transmission. A 225hp solely PureTech petrol engine model will also be available. All models are equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

    Prices are not yet confirmed but expected to match those of the aforementioned compact premium saloons, in the region of £32,000.
